Why he might be annoying:

By his own admission, he abused alcohol and developed short term memory loss.
He wrote 'A Little Less Conversation' to give to Aretha Frankin to record, but instead gave it to his buddy Elvis Presley to record.
'The Sting II' (costarring Jackie Gleason) was a box office disaster and his movie roles dried up until the late 90's.
He is an overachiever. He did 'The Will Rogers Follies' on Broadway (1990) just because his wife once said: 'You know what? You've never had your name above the title of a Broadway musical.'
He pretty much retired afterwards and played golf throughout the 90's.
He's been married three times and divorced twice.

Why he might not be annoying:

He grew up in the same town as Buddy Holly, observing that once he became a star he came back to Lubbock driving a convertible and walked with a blond on each arm. That's when he decided on a show biz career.
Two songs he wrote for Elvis, 'In The Ghetto' and 'Don't Cry Daddy,' went platinum. He also wrote 'Memories' for his NBC TV Comeback Special 'Elvis' (1968).
His song 'A Little Less Conversation' was remixed and became an international hit. It was also featured in the movies 'Ocean's Eleven' and 'Bruce Almighty,' and is the theme for the TV series 'Las Vegas.'
He was named 'Entertainer Of The Year' by the Academy Of Country Music (1975).
In a six year period, he appeared 17 times on 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson' (1970-76).
