Critic
    (July 27, 1924-September 15, 2000)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Film (1969-93) and theater (1993-2000) critic for the New York Times
    Reviewed over 1,000 movies
He refused to anthologize his reviews, claiming 'I don't think they would read very well.'
He became an indiscriminate Woody Allen fan, praising even his worst films.
Popular and critical successes that he panned include 'The Exorcist,' 'The Godfather Part II,' 'Chinatown,' 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,' 'Rocky,' 'Alien' and 'The Empire Strikes Back.'
His byline appeared on the front page of the New York Times three years after his death, as the author of Bob Hope's pre-written obituary.
He was an officer on landing craft during World War II.
He had a wry sense of humor.
He described a film as 'guaranteed to set all teeth on edge, including George Washington's, wherever they might be.'
Critic Richard Schickel said that he 'took the job seriously, but didn't take himself too seriously.'
