Why he might be annoying:

In most of his early TV guest appearances, he played jerks and bullies.
A sitcom pilot had him starring as 'Banraby,' a child's imaginary friend who resembled W.C. Fields (1965). Thankfully, it never aired.
He'll be forever remembered as the chuckle headed butcher dating that old crone maid Alice.
He did commercial voice overs and played a plumber for 15 years in TV commercials for Liquid Plumr drain opener.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the U.S. Navy.
He's been married to the same woman since 1944.
He won a competition on 'Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts.'
He appeared on Broadway in 'Stalag 17,' which led to his big break on 'The Phil Silvers Show' (1955).
He's been used frequently for cartoon voice overs ranging from 'Hong Kong Phooey' to 'Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends' to Disney's 'Tale Spin.'
