Football Coach

The Resume

    (October 26, 1911-January 3, 2003)
    Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Head coach of Miami University (1944-47), University of Cincinnati (1949-54), Los Angeles Rams (1955-59), San Diego Chargers (1960-69,1971) and Houston Oilers (1973-74)
    Pro record: 122-99-7
    College record: 81-19-2
Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1983) and College Football Hall of Fame (1989)

Why he might be annoying:

His pro playing career lasted only one season, with the Rams (1936).
He appeared in an episode of 'The Rifleman' and noted, 'I can't ride, I can't shoot, I can't act and I'm not very pretty, so the scriptwriter really faces a problem when it comes to figuring out my role.'
He came out of retirement to join the USFL's Oklahoma Outlaws only to be fired after six months in a dispute over finances (1983).

Why he might not be annoying:

Al Davis said, 'Sid Gillman was the father of modern-day passing. It had been thought of as vertical, the length of the field, but Sid also thought of it as horizontal. Sid used the width of the field.'
His other innovations included being the first coach to analyze game films, putting players' names on the backs of their uniforms, and suggesting to Pete Rozelle having the champs of the AFL and NFL play each other in what would become the Super Bowl.
He was the first coach to produce divisional champs in both the NFL and AFL.
He was married to his wife Esther for 67 years until his death.
