    American psychologist, born in Pittsburgh and raised in New York
    Founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, REBT
    Called the 'Grandfather of Cognitive Behavior Therapy'
    BA in Business from City University of New York, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Columbia
    Published over 800 articles and wrote over 70 books, including 'Theories of Personality,' 'Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy,' 'Sex Without Guilt,' 'Creative Marriage' and 'A Guide to Rational Living'
    Recognized as Humanist of the Year in 1971 by The American Humanist Association
    Died of complications related to pneumonia
    He started out as a Freudian psychoanalyst.
    He was an atheist who considered religion a danger to mental health.
    He is considered one of the founders of the sexual revolution, promoting very liberal sexual ethics which he based on the now disputed research of Alfred Kinsey.
    He considered homosexuality a pathological behavior that could be 'cured.' (He later changed his mind.)
    He could be quite egotistical.
    His parents, including his emotionally troubled mother, were distant emotionally when he was growing up.
    He was repeatedly very sick growing up, requiring hospitalization eight times between ages five and seven.
    He left psychoanalysis, finding it unscientific.
    He had an awesome work ethic; working sixteen hour days, seeing up to sixty patients a week, not including four group therapy sessions, and holding up to 200 talks and workshops a year well into his nineties.
    His REBT therapy has helped a lot of people.
    REBT helps its clients recognize the damage that their destructive thoughts and behavior have on their lives and how to deal with their problems by taking charge of their lives.
