Why he might be annoying:

During the 1979 season, he would duck into the clubhouse to drink beers during games and repeatedly drank until he blacked out.
After checking into the Meadows for rehab, he said, 'It's not so bad. It's a great place to meet women.'
He did not get to pitch in the 1989 World Series since the delay caused by the Loma Prieta earthquake allowed manager Tony La Russa to re-use Game 1 starter Dave Stewart in his place.
He retired second to Steve Carlton for most balks in a career.

Why he might not be annoying:

He came to national prominence when he struck out Reggie Jackson in a classic pitcher-slugger duel in the 9th inning to clinch Game 2 of the 1978 World Series.
Roger Clemens taunted him and fellow recovering alcoholic Dennis Eckersley with 'Drink beer like a real man, not any more of that milk.'
As of 2014, he was the last pitcher with 25 or more wins in a season (27 in 1990).
He was pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks when they won the World Series (2001).
