Won a Pulitzer Prize for his memoirs (1954)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a white supremest, feeling whites were superior to blacks and Jews.
He tried to keep the U.S. out of World War II.
In the late '30s, he reviewed Nazi air power in Berlin and was given a medal.
Despite media and public pressure to return the medal to the Nazis, he refused.
In 1941, he gave an anti-war speech in Des Moines Iowa, claiming the groups who wanted us in World War II were 'The British, the Roosevelt Administration and the Jews.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first to solo a plane across the Atlantic Ocean ((May 20-21, 1927).
Along with Alexis Carrel, he invented an artificial heart (1931-35).
He was against supersonic flight stating it would damage the atmosphere.
His two year old son was kidnapped and killed (1932).
He was one of Times 100 heroes of the century.
