    (circa 1398 BC-1338 BC)
Queen consort of Pharaoh Amenhotep III
    Mother of Akhenaton
    Mother-in-law to Nefertiti
She might have been only 11 when she married.
She ran the lives of her adult children and perhaps her husband's too.
She may have persuaded her daughters to marry their father.
Some also believe that she and Akhenaton were ‘consorts' (that is, were incestuous).
She looks rather cranky in many surviving images.
Her nationality is unclear (she may have been Nubian) and has lead to some heated debate in academia.
She married a pharaoh even though she may not have been royal herself.
She is the first Egyptian woman whose name appears on state documents.
She had important advisory roles during her husband's and son's reigns.
Both Amenhotep and Akhenaton built shrines dedicated to her.
Letters from foreign kings often cite her political shrewdness.
The incest rumors about her son perhaps started because she was still called ‘beloved king's consort' after Amenhotep's death.
She may have died of the plague.
