    Born in Paris, France
    Son of Irish nationalists John MacBride and Maud Gonne
    Founded the Irish political party Clann na Poblachta
    Irish Minister for External Affairs (1948-51)
    Founding member of Amnesty International
    United Nations Commissioner for Namibia (1973-77)
    Co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (1974)

Why he might be annoying:

    He joined the Irish Republican Army at age 12, eventually rising to chief of staff.
    He refused to let Ireland join NATO, since it would recognize British control over Northern Ireland.
    As head of a UN commission studying communications, his recommendations were attacked in the US and Britain as restricting freedom of the press (1980).
    A reviewer of his autobiography noted, 'He emerges from his own writings as a man of unusual vanity.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He left the IRA (1937) and renounced using violence to unify Ireland.
    He played a key role in convincing the Council of Europe to adopt a convention on human rights (1950).
    He was married to Catalina Bulfin for 50 years until her death.
