    He was unsuccessful as a Vice President candidate for his charges of corruption during the Credit Mobilier Scandal.
    He was bribed heavily by the railroad companies involved in the scandal.
    He left public office in dishonor.
    He was Speaker of the House during the Andrew Johnson impeachment affair, which would have made him president if Andrew Johnson was removed from office.
    He was an early supporter of black voting rights.
    He died in Mankato, Minnesota after a long career of being a lecturer.
