The Resume

    (October 31, 1963- )
Birth name is John Martin Maher
Guitarist for The Smiths and Modest Mouse
Played with The Pretenders, Electronic, The The, Johnny Marr + The Healers
With The Smiths, recorded albums: ‘The Smiths,’ ‘Meat Is Murder,’ ‘The Queen Is Dead,’ ‘Strangeways, Here We Come’
Recorded songs: 'How Soon Is Now?,' 'Bigmouth Strikes Again,' 'Panic' and 'You've Got Everything Now'
With Johnny Marr + The Healers, recorded: ‘Boomslang’

Why he might be annoying:

    He smokes.
He changed his name to avoid being confused with the John Maher who was the drummer for The Buzzcocks, a Manchester punk group which influenced The Smiths.
He used to throw up right before going on stage with The Smiths.
Marr and The Smiths singer Morrissey bickered constantly regarding the group’s direction.
He was arrested in 1981 on suspicion of receiving stolen goods; charges were never filed.
He said that he would have joined The The in 1981 had he not been too broke to travel from Manchester to London.
Although he co-founded Electronic with Bernard Sumner (from New Order), he never took a central role with another group after the breakup of The Smiths until he formed Johnny Marr + The Healers.
He left The Smiths in 1987, precipitating the group’s demise.
Years after the breakup, Marr and Morrissey were on the losing end of a lawsuit filed by former bandmates Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke for back pay and equal royalties.
Although he formed Johnny Marr + The Healers in 2000, they did not release their debut album until 2003.

Why he might not be annoying:

He composed all of The Smiths’ music, leaving the lyrics to Morrissey.
He produced the album ‘The Queen Is Dead.’
He is one of the most influential guitarist to emerge in the 1980s.
Although Marr and Morrissey fought often regarding The Smiths’ direction, they had a deep respect for each other, and a mutual passion for artists like The New York Dolls, Patti Smith and The Marvelettes.
Among his bandmates in The Healers is Zac Starkey, son of Ringo Starr.
He has played with such acclaimed artists as Pet Shop Boys, Billy Bragg, Kirsty MacColl, Bryan Ferry, Talking Heads and Oasis.
In addition to The Buzzcocks, Marr was influenced by The Stooges, Marc Bolan and T. Rex, and Motown.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Angie Brown, in 1985.
In November 1986, he was fortunate to walk away from a gruesome automobile accident which could easily have cost him his life.
Mike Joyce described the wrecked car as being ‘concertina-shaped.’
Despite ruling against him, the judge in the Joyce lawsuit described Marr as being the most intelligent of The Smiths.
