U.S. Senator
    (October 9, 1941- )
Republican Senator from Mississippi (January 1989-December 2007)
    Senate Majority Leader (1996-2001)
Republican member of the House of Representatives from Mississippi (1973-1988)
He was forced to step down as the incoming senate majority leader for the Congress which was to start in 2003 after controversy erupted over this statement made at a party celebrating Senator Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday:
'I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years.'
What was noteworthy about this statement was that when Strom ran for president in 1948, he did so as a Dixicrat, which was a party consisting of southern Democrats with a segregationalist agenda.
He went as far as appearing on BET to apologize for that statement.
He made a similar statement in 1980 at a Ronald Regan presidential rally.
He has a history of going in favor of policies that do not favor African Americans.
He voted against establishing a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
He played a significant role in getting back Jefferson Davis' U.S. citizenship.
He is a homophobe, as he once called homosexuality a 'sin,' while at the same time, compared homosexuals with alcoholics.
    He has ridiculous-looking hair.
    He is a neat freak.
    He is admired by Mississippians.
He was the first Republican to be elected Whip in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
