Best known for his novel 'Moby-Dick (1851)'
Wrote 'Typee (1846),' 'Omoo (1847),' 'White-Jacket (1850),' 'Pierre (1852),' 'The Confidence-Man (1857)' and 'Billy Budd (published posthumously, 1924)'

Why he might be annoying:

He couldn't hold down a job.
As a sailor, he once jumped ship because he couldn't stand the captain.
His books about his sailing adventures are full of exaggerations.
His novels were commercial failures.
He eventually gave up writing fiction.
Many students are forced to read 'Moby-Dick,' which is a long, long book.
The omnipresent Starbucks coffee chain is named after one of his characters.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had scarlet fever as a child.
His father ruined the family business, then died.
He dropped out of school at 13 to help his mother raise the family.
He was once captured by cannibals in the Polynesian islands.
The publishing house that printed 'Moby-Dick' burned down, and he was never compensated for the destroyed copies.
When the book was first sold in England, the last page was accidentally left out.
He outlived two sons.
He provided generations of students with inappropriate giggles at the name 'Moby-Dick.'
