Military Personnel
    (November 8, 1885-February 23, 1946)
Oversaw the invasions of Singapore and Malaya (1941-1942)
Commander of all Japanese ground forces in the Philippine Islands (1943-1945)
He is famous for plundering millions of dollars worth of gold and silver treasures from Southeast Asia. He subsequently hid it in secret locations through-out the Philippines.
Hundreds of people have hunted for the treasure (now called 'Yamashita's Gold') since 1945, and have found nothing.
While under his command in Singapore, his soldiers captured 80,000 allied soldiers, even though they were outnumbered by 50,000.
When US forces invaded the Philippines his forces fought a guerilla war as they slowly retreated into the mountains (1944).
    He was a career soldier.
He smoked opium while stationed in Manchuria.
The story of 'Yamshita's Gold' is one of the best known buried treasure legends.
He wanted a quick end to the war with China, as well as good relations with the US and Great Britain.
Before his triumphs in Singapore and Malaya, he was treated poorly by the Japanese high command.
He constantly clashed with Japanese War Minister, Hideki Tojo.
He was tried and convicted of war crimes in the Philippines. It is widely believed he had no connection to crimes committed under his command.
It is widely accepted that he was put on trial as revenge from Douglas MacArthur, who was trying to glorify himself even more as the liberator of the Philippines.
He was found guilty of war crimes on basically no evidence.
