    The British Tobacco Company's American retail sector BATUS Inc. bought a controlling interest in the company in 1972.
    They did not open stores outside the East Coast or Midwest states until 2003.
    They sell designer merchandise from celebrities such as Lauren Conrad and Jennifer Lopez.
    In 2012, an investigation discovered that several stores were marking up prices weeks before certain sales in order to make products appear as if they were being sold at discounted prices.
    Many consumer watchdogs and media outlets have lauded the company for its environmentally friendly initiatives such as reusable shopping bags and solar panels.
    In fact, 'Newsweek' ranked it 18th out of 500 overall and first in its industry in the magazine's 2009 'Green Rankings.'
    It surpassed J.C. Penney in 2012 as the largest department store chain in the United States.
    It was also listed as the 20th largest retailer in America by retail sales (2013).
    Through the company's organization Kohl's Cares, they have donated millions to children's charities.
