The Resume

    (April 19, 1858-October 20, 1942)
Born in Moama, New South Wales, Australia
Birth name was Mary Jeanette Robison
Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for 'Lady for a Day' (1933)
Acted in 'Alice in Wonderland (1933),' 'Anna Karenina (1935),' 'A Star is Born (1937),' 'Bringing Up Baby (1938),' 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938),' 'Four Daughters (1938),' and 'Joan of Paris (1942)'
    No relation to Flora Robson

Why she might be annoying:

She was typecast as needling old biddies and upper crust society matrons.
She had top billing in the 1940 comedy 'Granny Get Your Gun.'
She took part in Paramount's disastrous 'Alice in Wonderland' as the Queen of Hearts (which almost doomed the studio until getting saved by two Mae West sex comedies).
She lost the Best Actress Oscar to Katharine Hepburn - only to go on to portray Hepburn's zany Aunt Elizabeth in 'Bringing Up Baby' four years later.
She was on the receiving end of the famous line 'I Just Went GAY All of a Sudden' from Cary Grant in 'Baby' - the first such use of the word 'gay' in a homosexual context.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her father died when she was a child.
She and her husband emigrated from England to settle in Fort Worth, Texas in the 1870s.
She lost two of her children to scarlet fever and was widowed twice.
She appeared opposite Jean Harlow in three films.
She is the earliest-born woman, and the first Australian to be nominated for an Academy Award.
She is fondly remembered as Janet Gaynor's grandmother who urges her to follow her dreams and become a star (future remakes of the movie would eliminate the character altogether).
She said 'I want to keep working right up until the final curtain. I've got to work - I can't be happy unless I'm working!'
