Premise: Disappearance of a child sparks a chain of events leading to dark government agencies (and supernatural forces) converging on a small town

Why Stranger Things might be annoying:

It plays on the eighties nostalgia of its Gen-X fan-base.
It could be characterized best as Stand By Me/The Goonies meets E.T. and the Alien series.
Shannon Purser has attained a cult following among fans for playing a minor character killed off in episode 3 (#Justice4Barb).
Why did it seem that - aside from Joyce Byers - the other kids' parents seem either oblivious or downright indifferent to their kids' whereabouts/misadventures?
It fell back on several old movie clichés/tropes (the outsider, the bully, the vapid teenage girl, the rogue cop, etc.)
Jonathan Byers was arguably engaging in acts of stalking by photographing his schoolmates without their knowledge.
We all remember David Harbour's weird, long-winded acceptance speech given when the show was honored at the SAG Awards, complete with (a possibly tipsy) Winona Ryder making exasperated and stoic expressions behind his back (Jan. 29, 2017).
Millie Bobby Brown was convinced to shave her head for Eleven after watching Charlize Theron in 'Mad Max.'

Why Stranger Things might not be annoying:

It revived Winona Rider's film career.
It is a Sci-Fi/Horror genre show which places more emphasis on character development than special effects.
The child protagonists were cast before there was even a complete script, so the characters' personalities could be tailored to the actors themselves.
The Duffer Brothers admitted to borrowing stylistically from Steven Spielberg, Guillermo Del Toro, John Carpenter, and Stephen King (see 'Stranger Things' font) to give their show an 'eighties feel.'
The Duffer Brothers pitched their story idea to Netflix by splicing together a fake trailer with clips from 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' 'Halloween,' and 'Poltergeist' (obviously, it worked).
The first season received a total 18 Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series.
It is arguably Netflix's most binge watched show, after Fuller House and Orange Is the New Black (difficult to say for certain as Netflix refuses to reveal viewership numbers).
Sarah Hyland, Amy Schumer, Elijah Wood, and Darren Criss all have donned Stranger Things-themed Halloween costumes.
It sparked an increase in demand for Eggo waffles (Eleven's favorite food), resulting in a memorable 'vintage eighties' Super Bowl LI commercial paying homage to the series' product placement.
It pays homage to eighties pop culture while also being a wholly original creative property, in its own right, that captures the imagination (e.g. the Demagorgon, the Upside Down, the interactive Christmas Lights).
