    (September 6, 1976- )
    Born in Azalea, Oregon
Won a gold medal at the 2003 World Championships
    Four-time US champion (2000,2002-03,2006)
Won the USATF's Jesse Owens Award (2003)
Commenting on his somber demeanor, one of his coaches said, 'I don't even know if Tom knows a joke.'
In discus and javelin, he had a history of throwing much better in practice than in competition.
He failed to medal at three Olympics: he finished fifth in 2000, was unable to finish due to a foot injury in 2004, and was unable to compete in 2008 due to another injury.
    He is left handed.
His coach said, 'I don't recall him ever complaining about a workout, that it was too hard or too cold.'
He qualified for three Olympics, which is a rarity for decathletes.
