The Resume

    (1857-August 8, 1937)
Born in Onchan, Isle of Man
Watercolor illustrator of characters in Charles Dickens literature (The Characters of Charles Dickens in 1889 and Some Well Known Characters from the Works of Charles Dickens in 1892)
Subject of ‘The Curious Case of Joseph Clayton Clark’ by Robert R Wark (1996)

Why he might be annoying:

In life or death, among other things, proper snapshots of him were nearly impossible to come by.
History is not clear on the date of his birth.
Even in the most casual of settings, it was a challenge to catch him out of a grey suit, homburg (felt hat with a dented ‘gutter’ crown), or carnation in a buttonhole.
He blew a great deal of his income at the racetrack.
His stint at Punch (a 19th-century British humor magazine) lasted all of a single day.
Not until more than four decades after his death would clear details about his life emerge in earnest (not that they were clear in life, either).

Why he might not be annoying:

Though he himself never served, he was named for his father, a captain of the British Army.
He also designed cigarette cards (predecessor of the contemporary sports trading card) and postcards.
A few of his drawings depicted the average reader of local London publications (Some Typical Newspaper Readers, circa 1900), such as the Sunday Referee or The Daily Mail.
Once he left Punch, he moved to Fleet Street Magazine — and never looked back.
In time, he moved his family out of the London metropolis into a West Sussex town rather than ‘Dickens-land’ (Kent).
Several of his watercolors were issued as stamps to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Dickens’ birth.
