    (June 2, 1946- )
Born in Bingley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom
Killed thirteen women and assaulted another seven over a six-year period (1975-80)
    Known as the Yorkshire Ripper
    Incarcerated at Broadmoor Hospital
He would bludgeon his victims with a hammer, then stab them dozens of times.
He was interviewed by the police nine times without them realizing he was the killer.
One of his friends went to the police with his suspicions that Sutcliffe was the Ripper, only to have his statement lost amid the mountains of paperwork about the case.
He was finally arrested after being stopped in his car with a prostitute (January 2, 1981).
He claimed he had heard the voice of God telling him to kill coming from a tombstone while he worked as a gravedigger.
The prosecution was originally going to accept a plea of guilty to 13 counts of the reduced charge of manslaughter on the grounds of 'diminished responsibility.'
Justice Boreham refused to accept the plea and insisted on having a jury decide if Sutcliffe was legally insane.
As a result, he was found guilty of murder and received a life sentence (May, 1981).
The problems police encountered in dealing with the volume of paperwork while investigating the killings prompted the creation of the HOLMES (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) Computer system.
He was assaulted four times (as of 2008) by fellow inmates.
He lost the vision in his left eye after being stabbed with a pen (1997).
Although the press claimed Sutcliffe had received 200,000 pounds for the attack, the West London Mental Health Trust, which runs Broadmoor, denied he had received any compensation.
