    Directed the films 'Gumshoe (1971),' 'The Hit (1984),' 'My Beautiful Laundrette (1985),' 'Prick Up Your Ears (1987),' 'Sammie and Rosie Get laid (1987),' 'Dangerous Liaisons (1988),' 'The Grifters (1990),' 'Hero (1992),' 'The Snapper (1993),' 'Mary Reilly (1996),' 'The Van (1996),' 'The Hi-Lo Country (1998),' 'High Fidelity (2000),' 'Fail Safe (2000),' 'Liam (2000)' and 'Dirty Pretty Things (2002)'
    Between 1972 and 1983 Stephen directed only British tele-movies that have since received virtually no international distribution.
    He often directs films concerned with love triangles and love stories with tragic endings.
    He admits that his American productions have been much easier to make than British ones; hence the reason he often turns down quality English scripts for average American ones.
    He frequently works with playwright Alan Bennett and credits a lot of the success of his films to his writing, stating in an interview 'writing is gold dust and you can simply raid those riches.'
    He has directed many commercials including a Diet Coke ad starring George Michael and a few 'straight-to-internet' ads for Volvo starring Robert Downey, Jr.
    He has a Cambridge law degree.
    He kick-started the career of Daniel Day Lewis.
    He has a good eye for talent and often uses foreign actors with no previous experience in American films.
    He won an award for Best Director at the 2003 British Independent Film Awards.
    He won an OCIC award in 2000 and the Sergio Trasatti Award in 2002 at the Venice film festival.
    He won the Silver Berlin Bear at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival.
    He is modest and credits everyone but himself in interviews.
