Why they might be annoying:

On their first single 'Pollyanna' they mimicked The Four Seasons so well the group threatened a lawsuit and kept the single from being played.
A Brooklyn based group calling themselves The Classics also threatened with lawyers so they added the IV.
They went through many line-up changes, including Cobb quitting guitar and concentrating on writing after 'Spooky' and Yost giving up drums for full time singing duties.
After 1972 Cobb, keyboardist Dean Daughtry, drummer Robert Nix and songwriter/producer Buddy Buie left to form the Atlanta Rhythm Section.
By then the group was called Dennis Yost and the Classics IV, but retaining the rights to the group name yielded Yost no more Top 40 songs.

Why they might not be annoying:

Yost came from an R&B group The Echoes and joined bandmates Cobb, Eaton and Wilson who went by Leroy & the Moments in '65 to form The Classics (there wasn't a Leroy anyway).
Cobb and Buie heard a sax instrumental titled 'Spooky,' rearranged the music, added lyrics and came up with a #3 Billboard song in 1967.
The group followed the hit up with 'Stormy' (reaching #5 in 1968) and 'Traces' (#2 in '69), giving them three hits in two years that each sold more than a million copies.
While performing the oldies circuit in July 2006 Yost fell and suffered a massive brain injury which left him and his wife in massive debt from medical bills.
To help with costs Rhino Records sponsored a benefit concert in March 2007 with members from several '60s and '70s bands donating their time and singing their hits, donating all proceeds to Yost and his wife.
