    She angered environmentalist groups in New York by proposing to subdivide and sell nearly a third of historic Whitney Park to real estate developers (1997).
    She was one of the earliest supporters and largest underwriters of the USO.
    A long-stem pink hybrid tea rose is named in her honor.
    Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney left her his entire fortune in his will. With a net worth of over $100 million she belonged to over 50 charities.
    She received the Eclipse Award of Merit for a 'lifetime of outstanding achievement in Thoroughbred racing' (2011).
    Her racehorse, Birdstone, won the Belmont Stakes — denying racehorse Smarty Jones the Triple Crown (2004).
    Birdstone would later sire Mine That Bird, who won the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
    She was an active polo enthusiast who once presented the Whitney Cup to Prince Charles and Geoffrey Kent's Polo Team at Cirincester
