The Resume

    (1997-2007)
Office assistant in Microsoft Office 97, Office XP and Office 2003
    Animated paper clip
When you typed in an address followed by 'Dear,' it would pop up and observe, 'It looks like you're writing a letter. Would you like help?'

Why Clippy might be annoying:

It was inspired by the 'guides' from Microsoft Bob, the company's biggest flop.
It kept popping up asking if you wanted help whether you needed it or not.
    Bill Gates hated it.
MIcrosoft programmers referred to it as TFC, allegedly meaning 'that f---ing clown.'
It was so unloved that advertising for Office XP boasted that it had been removed.
It actually still existed in Office XP, it just no longer was enabled in the default setting.

Why Clippy might not be annoying:

If you wanted assistance but did not care to receive it from an animated paper clip, you could replace Clippy with one of eight other animated office assistants.
After eliminating Clippy in Office XP, Microsoft launched a self-effacing internet promotion in which Clippy, voiced by Gilbert Gottfried, copes with unemployment.
The vi text editor program parodied Clippy with their own useless paperclip assistant, Vigor.
