    He was a heavy smoker.
    He initially supported the Japanese when they first occupied Indonesia.

    His grandfather, though a Hajji, abandoned his grandmother after their divorce.
    He stated that he was anti-capitalism but not anti-capital.
    He was one of Indonesia’s most famous contemporary writers.
    His works often clashed with the Dutch colonial authorities and the authoritarian regimes of Sukarno and Suharto, resulting in repeated imprisonment.
    During his imprisonment at Buru, he was compelled to eat rats and lizards, and denied a piece of paper and a writing utensil.
    As a result, he became a symbol of freedom of expression among human rights advocates.
    His works focused on the reality of hardships many Indonesians had to undergo during the 20th century.
    He spoke against the discrimination of Chinese Indonesians.
    He faced censorship as his books were banned.
