Politician
    (May 12, 1947- )
    Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Director of Carr Center for Human Rights Policy (Harvard)
Member of the Liberal Party of Canada (Etobicoke-Lakeshore riding; deputy leader, 2006–2008; leader, 2009– )
Author of ‘The Russian Album (1987),’ ‘Isaiah Berlin: A Life (1998),’ ‘Virtual War: Kosovo and Beyond (2000),’ ‘The Rights Revolution (2000),’ ‘Human Rights As Politics and Idolatry (2001)’ and ‘American Exceptionalism and Human Rights (2005)’
Head of the Liberal Party (2009-11)
Announced resignation as Head of Liberal Party (May 3, 2011)
While fluent in French, he has only a rudimentary knowledge of his ancestral language (Russian).
He left Canada in 1978 and returned in 2000.
He thinks the English understand less about multi-cultural society than Canadians do.
He lost his first leadership bid (2006) to Stephane Dion on the fourth ballot.
He became Dion’s only competition after Bob Rae withdrew from the 2008 Liberal leadership race.
Reluctantly, he went along with Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe to form an alliance that was to unseat Stephen Harper. It failed.
Under his leadership, the Liberal Party came in third in the 2011 federal election, the first time it has not been first or second in well over one hundred years.
During his two decades outside of Canada, he achieved key positions at Cambridge and Oxford.
Though raised Russian Orthodox, he is not particularly religious.
He was the son of a diplomat, grandson of a minister under Czar Nicolas II, and great grandson of a minister under Czar Alexander III.
In addition to his non-fiction works, he authored at least three fiction works and two screenplays.
He was married to his first wife – a Brit – for two decades. He later married a Hungarian.
He didn’t think it was a wise idea to have a federal election so soon after the previous election (then again, it was a minority and Harper ended up with a virtually duplicate result).
He believes that beating the bad guy sometimes means being the bad guy.
