    (August 31, 1982- )
    Born in Portland, Maine
Won three Olympic gold medals in the 4x100 meter medley (2000-08), silver in the 100 meter butterfly (2004) and bronze in the 4x100 meter freestyle (2004)
Held the world record in the 100 meter butterfly (2003-09)
He was overshadowed by Michael Phelps.
He suffered depression after the 2000 Olympics.
Before the Beijing Olympics, he mused, 'I should want eight medals, same as Michael. In my case I don’t want that. I don’t know why.'
He was blamed for costing the US the gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay due to a mistake starting his leadoff leg (2004).
He noted that being diagnosed with depression was something of a relief: 'It was a thought of hope to think I didn't have to feel that way. I thought everyone felt that way.'
He developed interests outside the pool, including photography, cooking, restoring cars and playing the guitar.
After Phelps edged him out for gold in the 100 meter butterfly, Phelps gave Crocker his spot in the 4x100 meter medley so Crocker could earn a gold medal (2004).
After Phelps' announcement, Crocker said, 'I'm kind of tearing up. I'm going to do everything I can to make it feel like it was the right decision.' (They got the gold, so presumably it was a good decision.)
