He was fired by the Braves as he started the 1952 season with a 13-22 losing record.
He didn't start playing in the 1950 season because of an injury until the month of June.
Phil Cavarretta beat him for the 1945 NL MVP Award.
Despite recording an 8th inning RBI in Game 1 of the 1948 World Series, the Braves lost the series to the Cleveland Indians in 6 games.
He was a member of two World Series losing teams (1948 and 1952).
