    (January 1, 1914-September 13, 1944)
    Born in Moscow, Russian Federation
    Published 'Twenty Jakata Tales' (1939)
Radio operator for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) in occupied France during World War II
    Code named Madeline
Murdered by the SS at Dachau concentration camp
Posthumously awarded the George Cross for gallantry (1949)
Although her SOE superiors doubted her suitability for espionage, she was sent to France due to a severe shortage of agents.
She was considered too clumsy, too emotional and too scared of handling weapons.
She violated security regulations by keeping copies of the messages she sent in a notebook.
After her capture, the Germans were able to use the information to send false messages to the British, who parachuted in three agents that were immediately captured.
She refused an offer to return to Britain as she was the last link between her resistance group and London.
She was betrayed by a double agent.
She fought so fiercely on her arrest that she was classified as an extremely dangerous prisoner.
The former head of the Gestapo in Paris testified that she never gave them any information during interrogation.
She was beaten by a sadistic SS guard before being executed with a shot to the head.
    Her last word was 'Liberty.'
