Why he might be annoying:

Like most African-American performers of his day, he was typecast as a cook, Pullman porter, janitor, and other menial roles.
His characters were bug-eyed, nervous, and easily frightened caricatures.

Why he might not be annoying:

He performed with an appealing energy that usually offset the demeaning nature of his roles.
He was a master of the double take.
While his characters were nervous and skittish, they were rarely ever dim-witted.
He appeared with several top players in the Columbia shorts, including the Three Stooges, Andy Clyde, Charley Chase and Hugh Herbert.
