Outlaw

The Resume

    (October 4, 1931-December 20, 1973)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Corrupt Chicago cop (1951-60) and investigator in the Cook County Sheriff's Department (1962-64)
Became a 'made man' with the Mafia under the guidance of Sam Giancana
Killed by a shotgun blast to the head in a Chicago sandwich shop at age 42
His cop turned wiseguy was the basis for Richard Bright's portrayal of Al Neri in the 1972 film 'The Godfather'

Why he might be annoying:

He joined the Mafia even though his grandfather, a sewer contractor, was killed by the mob.
Early in his criminal career, he became a security officer for UPS, which allowed the crime syndicate easy access to hijack company trucks.
He was rejected for consideration as a cop for being too short (5 feet, 7 inches) and poor eyesight (20/200), but Giancana's money helped him grow and corrected his vision.
Working both sides of the law allowed him to get shares of crooked cop money and be paid by the Chicago Outfit for info on raids and muscling in on rivals illegal casinos and sports betting parlors.
He was fired from his law officer position in 1964 for lying to a grand jury about a stolen drugs case.
He served a three year sentence in the slammer (1968-71) after being convicted as an accessory to a bank robbery.
His murder may have been in retaliation for the earlier hit in 1973 on 'Mad Sam' DeStefano.
His name has been thrown around as a conspirator in the JFK assassination.

Why he might not be annoying:

He joined the U.S. Army in 1947 and was stationed at the Virgin Islands, where he learned to speak Spanish.
In 1961, he helped train Cuban-Americans in Mexico for the Bay of Bigs invasion before being deported.
He helped U.S. Attorney Richard Ogilvie gain a conviction against mob boss Anthony Accardo (though it was later overturned).
For a short period of time, he became an informant for the F.B.I.
Before his murder, eye disease reduced his vision to near blindness.
Masked gunmen entered the sandwich shop where he was dining, removed a 'package' from him, and erased the right side of his face with a sawed-off shotgun (and a coup de gras bullet to the brain).
Like many mob hits, his murder was never solved, though it is widely believed Harry Aleman was one of the triggermen .
