The Resume

    (February 29, 1900-July 18, 1993)
    Born in Craiova, Dolj, Romania
    Birth name was Ioan Negulescu
American film director, screenwriter, and artist
Emigrated from his native Romania to Paris, Vienna, and Bucharest, before finally settling in New York City in 1927
Co-wrote the original story for 'Fight for Your Lady' (1937) and the screenplay for 'Expensive Husbands' (both 1937)
Signed on with Warner Bros. Studios as an assistant producer and second unit director
Directed films 'Singapore Woman,' 'Mask of Demetrius,' 'Three Strangers,' 'Johnny Belinda,' 'Humoresque,' 'Road House,' 'How to Marry a Millionaire,' 'Titanic,' 'Phone Call from a Stranger,' 'Three Coins in a Fountain,' 'Daddy Long Legs,' 'Boy on a Dolphin,' 'The Best of Everything,' and 'Jessica'
Career declined in the 1960s, at which point he moved back to Europe, eventually settling in Marbella, Spain

Why he might be annoying:

He titled his memoirs, 'Things I Did...and Things I Think I Did.'
He was replaced by John Huston two months into shooting 'The Maltese Falcon.'
Pauline Kael said that his 'Mask of Dimitrios' film 'had more mood than excitement.'
He was unceremoniously fired by Warner Brothers after the release of the acclaimed 'Johnny Belinda.'
He called Marilyn Monroe 'the girl you'd like to double-cross your wife with.'
He specialized in glossy 'three girls in the city looking for love' flicks which haven't aged well ('How to Marry a Millionaire,' 'Three Coins in the Fountain').
'The Best of Everything,' perhaps his ultimate 'three girls in the city' flick, ranked in Entertainment Weekly's Top 50 Cult Films of All-Time list (2003).
He angered Joan Crawford, during the filming of 'Best,' by taking Hope Lange's side during a dispute over who the camera would close on, and then later for cutting out two of her most crucial scenes from the film.
He was accused of short-changing the already insecure Alan Ladd during the filming of 'Boy on a Dolphin,' filming him from the least flattering sides and paying more attention to his sultry leading lady, Sophia Loren.

Why he might not be annoying:

He left home at the age of 12.
He was in Paris throughout the 1920s, where he studied Art Deco under the most prominent Modernist artists of the period, learning both sculpture and painting.
He was Hollywood's stylistic precursor to Douglas Sirk.
He was equally adept at directing heavy 'message dramas' and light romantic comedies.
Rona Jaffe called him 'very charming,' further saying 'everybody liked him.'
He and his wife purchased Greta Garbo's old Beverly Hills residence.
He originally sought to be an artist, and started out in films working as a sketch artist and set designer.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for Directing for his work on 'Johnny Belinda' (1948).
He won the 1955 BAFTA Award for Best Film for 'How to Marry a Millionaire.'
He directed Sophia Loren in her American debut (she was already an established star, but 'Boy on a Dolphin' was her first American production).
He tried, and failed, to convince Greta Garbo to accept her Honorary Oscar, which he lobbied for on her behalf (1955).
He very frequently snuck his own artwork into the set designs of his films to add to the atmosphere.
