Why he might be annoying:

His first marriage ended in divorce.
He survived a bullet to the shoulder in the West Bank (2002), only to be brought down by horse dander. (While leaving Syria on horseback, he suffered an allergic reaction that triggered a fatal asthma attack.)
Ironically, shortly before sneaking into Syria to cover anti-government uprisings, he told a 'Mother Jones' interviewer, 'I don't think there's any story worth dying for.'

Why he might not be annoying:

One of his favorite movies was 'The Big Lebowski.'
He learned Arabic, becoming fluent enough to not need a translator, which helped him win the trust of interviewees in the Middle East.
While reporting on the Arab Spring in Libya, he and three fellow New York Times reporters were kidnapped by a pro-Gaddafi militia.
They were held for six days, during which time they were blindfolded, beaten and threatened with execution.
He was widely hailed by colleagues as the best foreign correspondent of his generation.
The Los Angeles Times wrote, 'It is no exaggeration to say that Shadid raised the bar for contemporary war reporting in the Iraq conflict just as Ernie Pyle did as a correspondent in World War II.'
