World Leader
    (December 5, 1925-September 17, 1980)
Head of the Nicaraguan National Guard (1947-1979)
    Dictator of Nicaragua (1967-1979)
He was internationally denounced for human rights abuses.
He brutally put down all opposing political parties.
His victims were sometimes skinned alive, raped in front of their spouses, or had their eyes gouged out.
He personally pocketed international aid sent to help victims of a devastating Nicaraguan earthquake (1972).
Guerilla armies opposing his rule fought a long and bloody civil war against him.
He was only able to keep his power because of help from the United States.
When the Carter administration stopped supporting him, he was unable to maintain military control and had to flee the country.
He wrote a book blaming President Carter for all of Nicaragua's problems.
    He graduated West Point.
His father, also a Nicaraguan ruler, was killed (1956).
He himself was assassinated by guerillas shortly after losing power (like father, like son).
