He didn't have the best matches of his career until his mid-30s.
He played a face (a good guy) for the most part of his career.

He won the 1977 Rookie of the Year and 1995 PWI Editor's Award.
He had a series of classic matches with Ric Flair.
His match against Randy Savage at WrestleMania III is considered by many as the greatest WrestleMania match ever.
The Savage/Steamboat match was considered the greatest match in North America, until being replaced by a Flair/Steamboat match in 1989.
He was forced to retire in the mid-90s after an in-ring injury.
He is a true icon for many up-and-coming wrestlers.
