Why she might be annoying:

Her aunt, actress Ella Logan, told her she should become a set designer because ‘You can’t sing – you haven’t got the magic.’
She had a son out of wedlock with jazz drummer Kenny Clarke (1950).
Her song ‘I Want You to Be My Baby’ was banned by the BBC over the lyric ‘Come upstairs and have some loving.’ (1956)
While in Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, she became addicted to heroin.
During one overdose, she had to be revived by her lover, comedian (and fellow addict) Lenny Bruce.
    She went bankrupt (1975).

Why she might not be annoying:

At age fourteen, she won a songwriting contest with ‘Let’s Fly,’ which was recorded by Johnny Mercer and the Pied Pipers.
She won Down Beat magazine’s New Star award (1952).
She wrote the lyrics for the jazz vocalese classic ‘Twisted,’ which was later covered by Joni Mitchell.
Her husband, actor Sean Lynch, beat her.
She was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment of the Arts (2010).
Only achievement she was more proud of than her Jazz Master Award: becoming a US citizen (2001).
Late in her career she said, ‘By rights I should be dead. But I’m just happy I survived.’
