Conservatives argued her campaign to raise California's minimum wage unfairly impacted small businesses and restaurants.
One Democrat she defeated called her 'obnoxious,' then switched his affiliation to the Republican Party.

She was the first person in her family to attend, and graduate from, college.
She was the first woman to win the Profiles in Courage Award (for her work on environmental issues).
She was the first Latina elected to the California State Senate.
