    (circa 1951- )
    Born in New Zealand
Lost his right hand in an accident with a circular saw (1984)
Re-attachment of his hand was unsuccessful
Became the recipient of the first successful hand transplant (September 23, 1998)
He did not tell the transplant team that he had lost his hand while in a New Zealand prison serving time on fraud charges.
Or that he was wanted in Australia on additional fraud charges.
During a follow-up visit, he stole another patient's American Express card and ran up charges on it.
He skipped physical therapy sessions to hit the talk show circuit in America.
He dumped his wife and kids to run off with one of his nurses.
He kvetched that the color of his new hand did not match his skin tone.
He stopped taking immunosuppressive drugs, causing the transplanted hand to die, necessitating its amputation (February 3, 2001).
A year later, he asked for yet another hand. (Hey, third time's the charm, right?)
A member of the transplant team admitted, 'He's an absolutely charming chap.'
During the first year post-surgery, he gained enough mobility in the transplanted hand to be able to write with it.
He developed diabetes as a side effect of the drugs he had to take to suppress his immune system.
Hand transplants with greater long-term success have since been performed on several patients.
Hallam's main transplant surgeon, Dr. Jean-Michel Duberand, later used some of the same techniques to perform the first successful face transplant.
