Why he might be annoying:

He was divorced.
He did a disastrous job of testifying before Congress during a congressional investigation on the subversive influence of comic books in the 1950s.
Political pressures forced all of his gory magazines out of business, with the exception of the satirical Mad.
He had a weight problem.
He was a neat freak.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was obsessed with Zeppelins, and had the ID number of the Graf Zeppelin on his vanity license plate.
He would take the entire staff of Mad on annual vacation trips, footing the bill himself.
He was sued for trademark infringement over Mad's cover boy Alfred E. Neuman, but won the suit.
He refused to accept advertising for Mad.
For years he used the prevailing price of a hot dog at Nathan's to set the single-copy price of Mad magazine.
