The Resume

    (June 18, 1928-April 12, 2005)
    Born in Denver, Colorado
    Boxer, poet
Active with the La Raza Unida movement
Founded the Crusade for Justice (1966)
Wrote the poem, 'Yo Soy Joaquin (I am Joaquin)'
Held the First Chicano Youth Liberation Conference (March 1969)

Why he might be annoying:

He coined the term 'gringo establishment.'
He earned his nickname for being a rambunctious child who 'popped off' a lot (yep, that simple).
He clashed with other activists over his less orthodox methods.
He ran for office unsuccessfully four times before breaking from the Democrat Party and leaving politics.
His Chicano conference led to a treatise calling for Chicano separation from the US (the 'Spiritual Plan of Aztlan').
His first youth conference was poorly attended due to timing and weather conditions.
He was jailed after a student walkout he organized turned violent. He was later acquitted (1969).
He was arrested at an anti-war rally in Los Angeles and convicted of allegedly carrying a loaded weapon (1971). He served four months in jail.

Why he might not be annoying:

His mother died when he was two and he was raised by his father, who never remarried.
At nineteen, he turned pro and fought seventy-five times in his career.
When he retired from fighting to enter politics, he was ranked the 5th best boxer in the world.
He canvassed for the John F. Kennedy campaign.
He ran and operated his own sports bar (Corky's Corner).
'Yo Soy Joaquin' became an unofficial anthem for the Chicano movement.
He led a contingent of 1,000 Chicanos and American Indians in Martin Luther King's 'Poor People's March' on Washington.
He was the first to bring the Chicano rights movement (previously limited to migrant farmers) to the urban Hispanic population.
