He was influenced by gypsy music.
He became famous early in his career thanks to public praise from composer, Robert Schumann.
He fell in love with Schumann's wife, Clara, but did not pursue a relationship after Schumann's death (1856).
He had an affair with Agathe von Siebold (1858).
His music was considered old-fashioned by his contemporaries.

Why he might not be annoying:

He helped support his family by giving recitals in Hamburg inns as a teenager.
His music was constantly attacked by the Wagnerites, but he never spoke ill of Wagner.
He encouraged Antonin Dvorak and Gustav Mahler.
He was one of the 'three great Bs (Bach, Beethoven and Brahms).
