    President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (1961-1963)
    He was an alcoholic.
    He briefly worked as a washing machine salesman.
    He was extremely bland and mot charismatic.
    His dryness prevented him from receiving many leading parts.
    Most of his roles were as cynical, wise-cracking smart alecks.
    He unsuccessfully ran for a U.S. congressional seat (1966).
