    Born in Kirkkonummi, Finland
    Son of Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen
    Graduated from Yale School of Architecture (1934)
    Collaborated with Charles Eames
    Designed the Crow Island School in Winnetka, Illinois (1940), the womb chair (1948), tulip chair (1956), Washington Dulles International Airport (1962), TWA Flight Center (1962), and the Gateway Arch (1965)
    Worked with his father Eliel on an expansion of the Smithsonian
    Awarded AIA Gold Medal (1962)
    Died while undergoing an operation for a brain tumor in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Why he might be annoying:

    He got divorced. (1951)
    He had no other interests outside of architecture.
    He smoked a pipe. (See picture)
    His critics felt that his designs exhibited too many shapes and too little designs.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He managed to make a name of his own rather than merely being seen as following his father's footsteps.
    He selected Jørn Utzon's design for the Sydney Opera House.
    He was ambidextrous, though he preferred to use his left hand more often.
    His works are considered classics of mid-century modern design.
    His designs provided a bit more variety outside of the rigid uniformity of the International style he was primarily a part of.
    The Gateway Arch is the tallest monument in the United States and the world's tallest arch.
