    Born in Culiacan, Mexico
    Modern dancer and choreographer
    Performed in George Balanchine’s ‘Keep Off the Grass’ (1942) and ‘Rosalinda’ (1943)
    Founded the Jose Limon Dance Company (1947) and Jose Limon Foundation (1968)
    Dances he choreographed include ‘The Moor’s Pavane’ (1949), ‘La Malinche’ (1949), ‘The Traitor’ (1954), ‘There Is a Time’ (1956), ‘Missa Brevis’ (1958), and ‘A Choreographic Offering’ (1964)

Why he might be annoying:

    He frequently dismissed Los Angeles, where he grew up, as a cultural wasteland.
    He had a late start as a dancer, having not begun training until after becoming discouraged at his lack of progress as an art student.
    For a ballet based on Eugene O’Neill’s ‘The Emperor Jones,’ he had most of the cast, including himself, perform in blackface (1956).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He won Dance Magazine’s award for outstanding choreography for ‘The Moor’s Pavane.’ (1949).
    For a tour of Latin America, his dance company became the first one sponsored by the State Department’s International Cultural Exchange Program (1954).
    His company opened for the Shakespeare in the Park Festival (1962).
