    He received an eight-day sentence in the Bastille over a junta against Cardinal Richelieu.
    During the battle of the Faubourg Saint Antoine (1652), he was shot through the head, triggering rumors that he would face total blindness.

    He was instrumental in giving status to the literary maxim (axiom).
    He passed his titles and honors on to his son (1671), the year after the first English translation of his Maximes.
