He lived in the shadow of fellow opera composer Gioacchino Rossini.
His musical style didn't vary much from opera to opera.
He often set sad lyrics to happy music.
His compositions are a bit generic.

He grew up poor.
He was known for his professionalism and ability to meet a deadline.
All three of his children died as babies.
His wife died of cholera at 29.
He went insane after his wife died, and never fully recovered.
He was an important influence on Giuseppe Verdi.
Many of his operas are still performed today.
