Why he might be annoying
Some of his colleagues have criticized his open display of partisanship.
He defended Stanley McChrystal after his controversial Rolling Stone interview disparaging President Obama.
He was criticised, during his time with the DIA, for suggesting a dress code policy making female office-workers wear makeup, heels, and skirts.
He admitted to leaving the Obama administration on 'less than the best of terms.'
He generated controversy after tweeting 'Fear of Muslims is RATIONAL' which some construed as 'fear-mongering.'
He has drawn criticism for flip-flopping on issues like gay marriage and abortion (which are irrelevant to Middle Eastern policy anyway).
He joined 'lock her up' chants, in reference to Hillary Clinton's FBI investigation, when they erupted during his 2016 RNC speech.
His consulting firm came under fire when it was revealed that one of his clients had ties to the Turkish government and the Muslim Brotherhood.
That he sat in on classified national security briefings with then-candidate Trump at the same time that he was working for foreign clients, raised questions as to whether or not this was a conflict of interest.
Why he might not be annoying
He is one of nine children.
He came from a military family; with a WWII veteran father and a Brigadier General brother.
He married his high school sweetheart.
He and his brother are honored with 'Generals Flynn Day' in their hometown.
He's an avid surfer who used to work part-time as a lifeguard.
He is close with his son, who acts as his Intel consulting firm's Chief of Staff.
He was key in helping to dismantle al-Qaeda networks during his time with International Security Assistance Force, during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
He was widely believed to have foresaw the threat of ISIS, as Intelligence Chair, years before it actually took form.
He was a primary contender for Trump's VP slot, but ultimately lost out to Mike Pence.
His view on political correctness? 'My God, war is not about bathrooms. War is not about political correctness or words that are meaningless. War is about winning.'
