    Staff member of Chautauquan newspaper (1882)
    Attended Sorbonne University (1891-1894)
    Worked for McClure’s Magazine
    Wrote ‘The History of the Standard Oil Company’ (1904), ‘The Business of Being a Woman’ (1912), ‘The Ways of Women’ (1915), ‘The Nationalizing of Business, 1878-1898’ (1936), and ‘All in the Day’s Work’ (1941)
    Died in Bethel, Connecticut, United States

Why she might be annoying:

    Unlike most famous people of her time, she had a comfortable childhood.
    She refused to support women’s suffrage.
    She disliked being called a muckraker.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She was the only woman in her class when she graduated Allegheny College (1880).
    John Rockefeller bankrupted her father’s oil business, so she protested against business monopolies.
    She created a new kind of journalism known as investigative journalism.
    She campaigned against trusts.
    New York Times called her one of the ‘Twelve Greatest American Women’ (1922).
    She died of pneumonia.
