Will Durant (November 5, 1885-November 7, 1981), born in North Adams, Massachusetts
Ariel Durant (May 10, 1898-October 25, 1981), born in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine
Ariel's birth name was Chaya Kaufman
Will wrote 'The Story of Philosophy' (1926)
Together wrote 'The Lessons of History' (1968), 'A Dual Autobiography' (1977) and the 11-volume 'Story of Civilization' (1935-75)
They married when she was a 15-year-old student and he was her 28-year-old teacher.
She almost missed their wedding because she roller skated to the ceremony.
Although Ariel contributed to 'The Story of Civilization' from the start, she did not receive co-author credit until the seventh volume.
In the introduction to the first volume of 'The Story of Civilization,' Will wrote, 'Every chapter, every paragraph in this book will offend or amuse some patriotic or esoteric soul.'
Their books made philosophy and history accessible to the general public.
Will wrote a pro-integration 'Declaration of Interdependence' a decade before the start of the civil rights movement.
After 66 years of marriage, they died within two weeks of each other.
Asked at age 92 if he could summarize the lessons of history in one sentence, Will responded, 'Love one another. My final lesson of history is the same as that of Jesus.'
