Why he might be annoying:

He is frequently credited with originating or inventing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge when he didn't (actually it was friend Patrick Quinn, another ALS patient, who actually tied the challenge to ALS).
He popularized a viral challenge that involved people dumping buckets of water on their own heads, often more as an act of moral vanity than an actual charitable act.
He was nominated to be Time Magazine‘s Person of the Year for 2014 but lost to the Ebola fighters.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated from Boston College with a degree in communications.
He is responsible for making the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a viral phenomenon.
He raised an estimated $220 million for ALS research within a single year.
Playing for Boston College, he set baseball team records, once hitting a grand slam, a three-run homer and a double in a single game.
A huge baseball fan, he went on to work as the director of baseball operations at Boston College after graduating.
He learned his diagnosis soon after getting the job. It left him with a disability that kept him confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life.
He said of his newfound role as an advocate for ALS research: '[It] gives me another reason to get out of bed every day. Being part of something bigger than yourself is one of the best things you can do.'
